Notepad 5.01F/Project Manager (c)1992-1995 Pelican Software Inc. PO Box 741072 Houston, Tx. 77274-1072 72662,3050 Compuserve mesposito Cix mespo AOL 72662.3050@compuserve.com INTERNET 713 242-8928 Voice 713 242-9573 Fax Note to all current Notepad users: Please note that Notepad 5.0 is a rewrite of Notepad. The file format is different from earlier versions, and therefore can not open your old files without converting them first. Converting files is usually a big hassle, and you may just want to start fresh. If you do wish to convert your older Notepad files, an application to do this is provided with Notepad 5.0. It is called Nconvert.opa, and should be installed to the system screen and run like any other app. When you install it, you will see your Notepads underneath the Nconvert icon. By highlighting a notepad, and pressing enter, the convertor will ask you if you want to convert that file to Notepad 5.0 format. After it is done you will be able to convert others. All converted files are renamed with a .old extension. Top Level Notepads are now in a \Note\Pad directory, whereas lower level notepads (expanded) are still in a \Note\Expand directory. All code is now in an \App\Npad directory. Upgrade policy for Notepad 5.0 There is no upgrade path for earlier versions. This is a complete rewrite of the program, and is the first time anyone has been charged since the first release of Notepad 1.0, back in 1992. I can relate! The easiest way to successfully do a Quick Start with Notepad is to understand what the program does, and to memorize some of the fast ways of getting around. Here we go... What does Notepad do? Notepad organizes Ideas, Lists, Projects, Rough schedules, etc... Notepad 5.0 is not a structured type of project planner with graphs, but it is a free form "Notepad" for organizing notes. Most users will find that it does a fine job of organizing your ideas and Todo's. It certainly will do some things that the Agenda Todo lists will not. This is the only reason for this rewrite of Notepad. The Agenda just can't intelligently handle ideas and Todo's that need to have association, or linking to other lists, or application files. 1. A note in Notepad is... . Todo list item . An Idea . A Project Heading . A Link to a File . A Link to another notepad For example, I have a project called "Notepad 5.0". While I'm working on this project, I can enter ideas, bug reports, etc., and expand each note that is big enough to have it's own Notepad. This explains the biggest feature in Notepad, which is the ability to expand a note. (Link, Associate) Here's an example: 1. ToDo ----1. Use Buttons 2. Notepad 5.0 ------ | 2. Sizeable Screen 3. Business | | 3. Zoomable fonts 4. Home projects |----- 1. User Interface -- 5. Bills --- 2. Documentation ------- | 3. Bug Reports ---- |--1. Manual ideas | | | -- 1. Mortgage |-- 1. Shift not working 2. Electric 2. Process Exited... 3. Auto loan 3. Menu %S not responding The expansion, or heirarchy is limited only by available memory. This means that you can have an unlimited number of links. I don't recommend going too deep though, or you may get lost. :^} The unregistered version can go only two levels deep. How do I Expand a Note? You can expand a note by highlighting it, and pressing the Right arrow. Notepad will pop up a dialog that says "Expand note on...", letting you choose which drive to create the new expanded notepad on. Give it a file name, one that makes sense, and press Enter to create your new notepad. To get back to the previous notepad, press the left arrow key. This way the left and right arrow keys become your keys for moving through the notepad map. Characteristics of a note: 1. They can be 255 characters long. 2. They can have these extra characteristics: a. Expand to another notepad b. Have alarms attached c. Be linked to another Series 3a application (Word, Data, or Sheet) d. Have a Due Date attached Now, if you understand that Notepad can create lists of notes, where each individual note can be a project heading, single note, alarm, launching pad, you're ready to start memorizing some simple key commands. Of course you could just use the pull down menus but it's faster to learn the key commands. Don't worry, we're almost done! The first three are the most important: *Expand a note - Right Arrow key *Return to last notepad - Left Arrow key *Notepad Manager List - Escape key Enter a note - A, or Psion or Shift Update(Edit) a note - E, or Enter Attach an alarm - Psion Set a due date - Psion Shift Link to a S3a application - L, or Psion Edit Application Link - Psion Shift, or Shift Jump to the Project Viewer -

This is very simple to do since it only requires saving the note with a project Due date. You have the option to add or change the Due date of any note at any time. These features are very easy to use once learned conceptually. There are a few key commands to learn to make it all work fast. For example to expand a note, which lets you build a new list under it, making it the heading, just press the right arrow key. To link a note to a S3a application just set the cursor at the note you're interested in and press . The first time you do this you will be asked to identify which program and file you wish to link this note to. Notepad will link a note to almost any S3a application. (See the section on application linking for more info.) If you have attached Due dates to your projects press the

key and the Calendar type Project Viewer comes up showing up to 5 projects for each day. It would be highly unlikely that one would have more than five projects completing the same day. Unless of course the projects are just being used as Todo items, and the Due date attached is being used as an alarm or sorts. This is an alternative way of using the Project Viewer but it has the down side of possibly not being able to display all of your daily items. See section 12 Expand options to hear more about the Project Manager. Another very powerful feature of Notepad is the ability to link any note] to any S3a application, and launch the application by pressing for launch. Every time you launch an application in Notepad 5.0, the name of the app is saved to file, so that Np can later jump to any of these applications. SECTION [1-5] Disclaimer: Pelican Software Inc. takes no responsability for any lost data, or hardware malfunctions of any kind, due to the use of this software, or any other software that ships with Notepad. SECTION [1-6] Memory Usage: Notepad 5.0 uses about 24k of Ram to run. The Alarm Server uses about 15k of Ram to run.(Aserver.opo) SECTION [2-1] Installing Notepad onto system screen: Once you have Notepad copied to the S3a, from the system screen, press Psion to install Notepad. If you put the file into the \App directory, it will show up on the list of applications that can be installed when pressing Psion. After installing, run Notepad from the system screen by highlighting it and pressing Enter. You will be asked to Register your copy of Notepad v5.0 If you don't want to register at this time, press Escape. You will be given 21 days to use the program to see if you like it enough to buy it. To register your copy, type in your name, and serial number, which you will get from Pelican Software Inc. when you pay the registration. After you do this, you will have access to all of the options in the program. *** Note *** "Register" will show up as a menu option if you are not registered. SECTION [2-2] Adding a new note: A, Psion, or Shift Press one of the above key combinations to add a new note. Each note can be up to 255 characters. After entering a note Np will ask you whether or not you want to attach a Due date to this note. Select "Yes" or "No" to this dialog. Next you'll be asked for a priority level for this note. The default priorities like 1,2,3,4... can be changed by setting custom priorities. See the section on custom priorities for more info. Notepad 5.0 has a new multiline text editor that works just like the built-in Word program, except for a couple of features. 1. Notepad's text editor doesn't support highlighting of text. 2. Pressing Enter doesn't create a new line, but exits. Outside of these two differences, it's the same in every way. Even Bring is supported so that you can bring in text from other applications. We've even added a couple of features that Psion doesn't support. 1. Control deletes one word back. 2. Psion deletes whole line, but can be unerased using Psion. You can even zoom the font sizes between four different sizes. SECTION [2-3] Shortcut key/single key stroke commands: 1. Enter = edit note 2. Tab = Calendar 3. Home = top 4. End = bottom 5. A = Add a Note 6. E = Edit 7. I = Memory Device Info 8. J = Jump to Alarm Server 9. L key = Link to app 10. O key = Off 11. P key = Project Viewer 12. S = Start Alarm Server 13. X = Expand 14. 0 key = Calculator 15. Shift = Jump to Agenda 16. Shift = Shows current available System Memory 17. Shift = Toggles Auto Sorting On and Off 18. Shift = Jumps to LOG-IT! 19. Space = Mark item as done and save to log file 20. Escape key = Notepad Manager List 21. Shift = Enter data 22. Shift = Jump to Fastnote SECTION [2-4] Online Help: Extensive Online help is available in this version by pressing the help key. The actual Help text is in the file called Nphelp.rsc. SECTION [3-1] Creating New Notepad files: Psion There are two ways to create a Notepad file. . The first is by highlighting Np on the system screen, and pressing Psion for new. Select the file name and the drive you wish to store your new notepad on. . The second way is from within Notepad by pressing Psion. NOTE: This creates a new top-level (Parent) Notepad that will show up under the Notepad icon on the system screen. SECTION [3-2] Opening files: Psion There are two ways to open a Notepad file. . The first is from the system screen, by pressing Enter after highlighting the name of the Notepad file you want to open. . The second way is from within Notepad by pressing Psion for "Open". Note: You can store Notepad files on any drive, and they will show up on the system screen under the Notepad icon. (They must be .pad files created by using the "New" function, not expanded files.) Expanded files will not show up on the system screen since they will probably get too numerous. What are expanded files? Expanded files are notepads that are created by expanding a note in your main notepad. When you press the right arrow to expand a note, you are creating a notepad file which automatically gets an (exp) file extension. It is called an expanded file by us but you can think of it in any way you like. (Project) SECTION [3-3] Deleting a notepad or project file: Psion The Delete option will look into the Note directory for files with the extension .pad . You can move through the directory with the arrow keys to find the notepad file you wish to delete. If you currently have a project file open and want to delete a .pad file, just press the tab key and open the \Note directory. All .pad files reside there. Be careful when deleting notepad files. Before you delete a file, check to see if there are notes in the file that link to other projects. You may want to delete the project files that are linked to these notes first if they are no longer applicable. Example: You have a notepad called: Master.pad it contains 3 notes: 1. Work 2. Business ----- 3. Projects | Client.exp |--- 1. Client list |--- 2. Big job In this case if you delete the Master.pad you may be inadvertantly deleting the link to Client.exp. Now the link can always be recreated but you may not need Client.exp anymore, and now you may forget that it is even there. Wasted disk space. The way around this is to set the cursor to line 2 - Business and press Delete. Choose the option called "Note & Linked file" and Np will delete this note,(Business) and the linked file which is Client.exp. On the other hand you may not want to delete this project (.exp) file so you may want to link it to another notepad somewhere. You can do this by setting the cursor to the note, and press the right arrow to expand the note. To link it to an existing note, select "Yes" when it says "Link to existing". Press the down arrow and find the .exp file to link to. (In the above example it would be Client.exp) SECTION [3-4] Sorting a Notepad: Psion To sort the current Notepad just press Psion. It will sort by priority, or by Due Date. This is selectable in the preferences. If you set Notepad to Auto Sort, you won't really have to worry about sorting. With Auto Sort turned on, Notepad determines when it needs to resort the data. Marked as Done items go to the bottom of the list. Note: Pressing Shift will temporarily toggle Auto Sorting on and off. SSECTION [3-5] Compressing a Notepad: Psion This option lets you compress the data files to recuperate lost space from erasing records and updating. Files are automatically compressed when closed, as long as the file is on Ram and not Flash memory. The Operating system does this automatically. Np will not compress on Flash SSD's. It would eat up the disk space extremely fast since compressing makes a complete new copy of the file each time it is executed. NOTE: Normally you don't need to compress files, since when you go to open a different file, the one just closed is compressed for you. You may need to compress if you constantly stay in one Notepad, doing lots of updating. SECTION [3-6] Show Info: Psion Shift Info displays information about the current open Notepad, as well as registration information. Info will also now show you the last modified date of the current notepad. SECTION [4-1] Enter data: (A, Psion, or Shift) To enter a new note, just press one of the above key commands. This will bring up the full screen text editor. You can enter up to 255 characters. When your done entering your note, press Enter to save it. You will be prompted for a Due date, a priority, and an Alarm. (Both of which can be disregarded if not needed.) Full screen text editor - see Section 4-9 for more info on the Editor. The priority and Due Date can be edited individually later, so don't worry if you don't enter this info now. The priority levels can be changed by the user in custom priorities. If you enter a Due date it will show up in the Project Viewer. Project Due dates are as simple as they sound. If you want to mark a certain note with a Due Date, just set it when you're entering the note. You can use the Project Viewer to keep up to date with your projects. Notepad will also remind when the program starts if you have any projects due on the current day. SECTION [4-2] Entering data with a calculation: (Evaluate) When entering data, if you have a calculation you need inside the note enter the calculation inside [brackets like these], and Notepad will figure out the answer and put it into the note. Example Note: "Double House payment this month will be [750.14*2]" Notepad will evaluate the calculation inside the brackets, and change the note to read "Double House payment this month will be 1500.28" SECTION [4-3] Update/Edit a note: (E, Enter or Psion) This simply will let you edit the current note. It will also prompt you for a priority level. If an alarm is set, it will remain, but the message in the alarm will change if you change the note. So after updating a note with an alarm you will see Np send a message to the Alarm Server. (Aserver.opo) see Section 4-9 on the Editor if you have problems with Editor key commands. SECTION [4-4] Edit Due Date: Psion Shift Each note can have a Due Date. Sometimes you may want to edit just the Due Date and note the whole note. This menu option is provided so you can edit just the Due Date. When you edit the Due Date, the Project View data is updated. SECTION [4-5] Find: Psion When choosing the find option, a window comes up in the lower left hand part of the screen asking you for a search string. Type it in and if Np finds you selection it will highlight the found item. (See the next section for searching all notepad files.) SECTION [4-6] Search All: Psion Shift Press Psion-Shift to start this procedure. This option will first ask for a drive to search. It will only search one drive at a time. Next the Find: dialog will come up in the lower right part of the screen to differentiate itself from the standard find procedure. Search All will search through all notepads for your search string. If it finds a match you will be given the choice of opening the notepad where the match was found, or to continue searching. SECTION [4-7] Bring: Psion Notepad 5.0 supports the Bring feature. This means that you can go to any Built-in Psion app, highlight some text, come back into Notepad, and press Psion while in the Editor, or from the main Notepad screen, and Notepad will bring the text in. SECTION [4-8] Copy/Paste: Psion, Psion The Copy/Paste option works to allow pasting of notes between Notepads. Pressing Psion will copy the current note, and Pressing Psion will paste it into the current notepad. SECTION [4-9] Multiline Full screen Text Editor: New in Notepad 5.0 is a real multiline text editor. This was a big task in OPL, but it is finally finished, and it's very fast. The text editor is used when you enter a new note or edit a note. Here's how it works. 1. Word wrapping happens automatically at the end of each line so that while you're typing, the text editor will take care of wrapping at the end of the line. Note that pressing Enter saves the note. It doesn't cause a new line like in Word. Most key combinations are as they are in Word. right/left arrow to move cursor Control go to the start of next/previous word Psion to to the start/end of line Psion deletes current line to left of cursor Special Notepad Additions Control deletes word backward. Control Shift deletes a word forward. All Psion and Control operations copy deleted text into the unerase buffer. Psion inserts the text. Bring support Thanks to Tom Dolbilin and the work he did documenting Bring from OPL, Notepad 5.0 supports Bring. Highlight text in any other built-in application on the S3a, go into Notepad and press Psion from the editor, or from the main Notepad screen. TaskList Support Press Shift to bring up the TaskList. Print Screen Psion

will print the Editor screen to an attached printer. If the attached device is serial, the serial options come up first. SECTION [4-10] Erasing notes: Del key Use the delete key to delete notepad items. Np will present you with many options. Here they are listed. When deleting a note, or part of a note, you also now have the option of leaving the Due Date in the Project Viewer database alone. If you want to keep old Due Dates in the Viewer, set "Including Due Date" to No when in the Erase dialog. Current Note Only [All Notes] Marked as Done (All) Application Link Only Due Date Only Alarm Only Notepad Link Only Note and Linked Notepad Linked Notepad Only All priority [] 1. Current deletes the current note. (shown on screen) 2. [All Notes] deletes all notes 3. "Marked as done" deletes all notes marked using space bar. 4. Application link only deletes the application linking info attached to the highlighted note. 5. Project date removes the project Due date if set. 6. Alarm removes the alarm giving you the option to cancel it too. 7. Notepad Link removes the notepad-expansion link. 8. Note + Linked file erases the note and deletes the file it links to. 9. Linked file only deletes just the file linked to the note. 10. All priority [] will show the priority level of the highlighted note giving you the option of deleting all notes in this priority. If you try to delete a note with an alarm attached to it, Np will always ask you if you want to cancel the alarm associated with it. Likewise if you try to delete a note with a project date, Np will update the project data file. SECTION [5-1] Set an Alarm: Psion The Alarms capability is an important feature of Notepad. In fact without it Notepad would be severly crippled. The alarms in Notepad are unique to the S3a. One of the reasons is that Pelican Alarm Server has a snooze button. So, if an alarm is ringing and you aren't ready to take care of the item, you can hit a user defined snooze button. The S3a will not be locked in the alarm area until you cancel it, but will go on like normal letting you use any other programs. When you attach an alarm to a note, the bell character will be in the alarm field next to the note to show you that it has an alarm set. You can set the time and day, and the text of the note itself will become the message for the alarm. How does Notepad handle alarms? To handle alarms we wrote a separate application that talks to Notepad and can send data back and forth. It is called the Alarm Server. The fact that it is a separate application means that Notepad doesn't need to be running for the alarms to ring. This is important. You don't want your alarms to NOT function when Notepad is shut down. The Alarm Server is a stand alone application also. It can be used alone to set alarms. The alarm data that it uses doesn't have to come from Notepad. SECTION [5-2] Remove an Alarm: Psion Simply this will remove the alarm set for the current Note. A message will automatically be sent to the Alarm Server that the alarm data has changed. The Alarm Server will dump whatever it currently has queued and search the Alarm.dat file for new alarm info. This way if the alarm that you just removed was already queued, it will be cancelled. SECTION [5-3] Show/Edit Alarm: Psion This feature lets you see the time and date set for the alarm. You can also reset the time and date for the alarm from here. (See Section 11 for more info about the Alarm Server) Interesting to know here is that Notepad uses the same data file as the Alarm Server to see the alarm info. Therefore if alarm information changes from the Alarm Server side, the changes will show up here in Notepad. SECTION [5-4] Refreshing an Alarm: Psion Refreshing the alarms will open up the alarm.dat file to see if any of the alarms that were queued from the open notepad have expired. If so, the bell character that indicates an alarm being set will go away. The reason for this option is due to the fact that Notepad alarms can go off even though Notepad is not running. Therefore there is sometimes a need to refresh the marked alarms manually. Notepad performs this function when opening a new notepad, so the only time you would need to do this, using the menu option, would be if alarms have expired while you are in a certain notepad. If you edit an alarm in the Alarm Server, Notepad will still keep track of this particular alarm. Every note has a unique number attached to it so that Notepad can't lose track of an alarm. SECTION [5-5] Repeating Alarms: Repeating alarms is a feature in Np5.0. This is an important addition to Notepad. Alarms are great, but without repeating they are not as good as they can be. Here's how they work. First of all , repeating alarms is really a function of the Alarm Server, and not Notepad. Notepad supports repeating alarms, but the code to accomplish them is in the Alarm Server. (Aserver.opo) Here's a list of the possibilities: REPEATS: EXAMPLES: -------- --------- 1. Yearly :great for birthdays/yearly events 2. Monthly by date :same date each month. Aug31 repts to Sept30 3. Monthly by day :3rd fri of month;5th may be 4th next month 4. Monthly (last day) :Always last day of month 5. Weekly :Same day and time each week 6. Daily :Same time next day 7. Workday :Same time next Workday 8. Restday :Same time next Restday 9. Every (x) days :User defined days 10. Every (x) hours :User defined hours; good for 1 1/2 days.etc.. Now this looks fairly simple and it is. What you see is what you get. But there is a method behind how they work in certain situations. METHOD: All repeating alarms repeat based on the original time and date received. What this means is that when an alarm is specified as being a repeating alarm, the time and date for the alarm is saved to file. If at any time the time and date are changed by using the snooze or the reset option from within the Alarm Server, this data does not change. If it did change, the repeat information would change too. In most cases this is not what you want when you hit the snooze button. (you can still snooze and reset repeating alarms, but the original time and date are saved also.) Example: You have a yearly alarm set for a family members birthday, and it rings to tell you to give him(her) a call. For argument sake lets say it's set to ring at 9:30pm. Well at 9:30 it rings and you hit the snooze button, and again at 10:30, etc... The next time it rings, it's after 12:00 and now is the next day. If the Alarm Server was to reset the repeat based on the new time, it would ring a day late the next year, at 12:30am. This situation can be applied to all alarms and this is why repeating alarms are all based on their original time and date. Now there is a way to change this: In order to change this, use the Show/Reset option in Notepad, or the edit option in the Alarm Server. In these cases, it is assumed that you want to change the actual time for the repeat. SECTION [5-6] Checking Project Reminders: Psion Shift This option will show any projects due today. A reminder dialog will come up giving you the name of the project and it's Due date. Note that this reminder will come up at startup time also. SECTION [6-1] Notepad Manager Options: Escape, or Psion The Notepad Manager List features allow you to save a list of frequently used notepads/projects. Add to this list by choosing the "Add New" option, and finding the notepads you wish to put on the list. These frequently used notepads will now be loaded and appear in the Notepad Manager List.(Esc key) Note that the Project manager itself has options for setting and clearing this list. Press to see while in the main screen. SECTION [6-2] Application Link: L, or Psion This option will link any note to one of the following S3a apps: . Word . Data . Sheet This is an important feature for Notepad. It helps to create links between Notepad and other types of data on the S3a. The first time you press L on a Note, you are asked to choose the application type that you want to link to. You can select Word, Data or Sheet. Choose one of these. Next, fill out the filename if you want to create a new file. Otherwise, press the tab key to locate the existing file that you want to link your note to. For example: If I want to link a note to a certain Word file that I know already exists, I would first tell Notepad that I want to link to Word. Next I would press the tab key until to find the Word file that I want, highlight it, and press Enter. Press Enter again to save the Link. Notepad will now launch the Word file. New in Version 5.0 - The file you are linked to can be in any directory. This means that if you have a separate directory call \Letters that has Word files, you can link to these files, and Notepad will correctly find them. SECTION [6-3] Editing the Link: Shift, or Psion Shift Choose this option while highlighting a note with a link. You can edit, Change, or Delete a link from this option. One word of caution: Word files are big compared to Notepad files. If you try to use the Notepad link as an excuse to write many Word files, you will find that you will quickly eat up lots of memory. So, use Notepad as much as possible for notes that don't require the power of Word, and notes that don't need to go over 255 characters. SECTION [6-4] Custom Priority List: Psion Shift

This option lets you build your own lists of priority terms. This helps to make Notepad more personal, since noone would ever agree on which list was better. What is a priority term? Notepad assigns a priority level to all notes. There are 20 levels of priorities in Notepad. We have assigned to these priorities numbers like 1,2,3,4 etc... to signify the level of importance. These can be changed by you to names if you like, to make them more suitable to your own way of prioritizing todo items. When you choose "Custom Priority" from the main menu, a dialog comes up with seven choices. 1. View List - shows a list of current priority names 2. Add a New.. - lets you choose new names 3. Edit Item - lets you edit names 4. Delete Item - lets you delete names 5. Clear List - Deletes the entires list 6. Sort List - Sorts the list by priority 7. Quit - quits back to the main screen If you don't like the default priority names, you can build your own list. Use "View List" to show any current custom items. Use "Add New" to add a new item. Use "Edit Item" to make changes to your current list. Use "Delete" to selectively get rid of any item on the list. There is a maximum of 20 items in the list at this time. If you already have 20 items and want to add more, you'll have to delete something off the list first. SECTION [6-5] Expand Options: Psion Shift Expand Options refers to the Notepad Manager links that are created to link a note to another notepad. The options are: 1. Expand - create a new link 2. Edit - edit the current link 3. Remove - remove the link information Expand: When you choose expand, you will be given the option of creating a new notepad file, and from then on the note you are linking will always be able to link to this other notepad file by pressing the right arrow key. The benefit being that each note can now be a springboard or heading for a ToDo list, idea, project, etc... *** Note *** There are no limitations to how deep the notepads can go. The only danger is when creating too many links to too many files, it can get confusing. If you delete a file that has a link in it, you may be losing the only link through to certain notepads. Of course you can always re-link a note to any project, so the data is never lost. Editing the Link: Here you have the option of re-linking a current note to a different notepad. Choose drive and file. Removing a Link: This option will unlink this note so that it will not be linked to any other notepad. SECTION [6-6] Merge: Psion You can merge notepad or text files together with this option. In the case of the text files, the data must be in the first field. This can be a very useful option, in the case where you want to reorganize your to do lists by subject. After you merge two notepads you will be prompted to delete the file that was merged into the open notepad. You may or may not want to do this but I felt the option was needed. Make sure to choose the correct file type. (Notepad 5.0 or text) SECTION [6-7] Auto-Numbering Notes Use the feature when you want to renumber the priorities of all notes in the current open notepad. The notes will be renumber in the order they are. SECTION [6-8] Plug-Ins: Psion The Plug-Ins option will check for installed Plug-Ins, and if it finds any, will display them as menu items. Read the Plug-Ins text file for more info about writing Plug-Ins for Notepad. What are Plug-Ins? Plug-Ins are Opl program modules that anyone can write to interact with Notepad's data. Notepad was written with this idea in mind. Realizing that Pelican Software couldn't think of everything, the idea behind Plug-Ins is to allow you or anyone else to add to the program in some way. Ample information to accomplish this is given in the Plugins.doc file that is included with Notepad. Note that all Plug-Ins (*.plg) files should go into the \App\Npad\Plug directory. Plug-Ins are loaded automatically if they are in the \App\Npad\Plug directory. There is no need for any program to load them. (Plug-Ins must have a .plg extension) Plug-Ins makes Pelican products the most customizable programs available for the S3a. SECTION [7-1] Open Archive: Psion Shift This option will open the file that contains all of the notes moved by the "Archive All Done" option. The Archive file is actually a standard notepad. This makes is easy to view notes that have been marked as done. SECTION [7-2] Archive All Done: Psion Shift This will copy all "done" items to a separate notepad that stores only "done" items. The notepad is called "Archive". The benefit to using this method is that your done items will be more organized. You'll be able to any time and see what projects or todo's were completed. SECTION [7-3] Copy Done This feature lets you copy all "Marked as Done" items to a specific notepad, instead of archiving to the single archive file. This way you can create as many archives as you like, and using "Copy Done" copy items that are marked to your own archive. Here's an example of how to create your own archive. If I have a notepad called Bigdeal, I might create a new note inside Bigdeal called Archive. Expand this note, and call the expanded notepad "BigArch". Next, copy all "Marked as Done" items to the file called BigArch. Now you've linked a note called Archive to a special notepad which has become an archive file for Bigdeal. SECTION [7-4] Log Note as Completed: Psion Shift The log file is a file saved by Notepad when you press the space bar to mark an item as done. You will be asked if you want to save the date of completion of this project to the log file. If you answer "Yes", the note, Due date, and competion date will be saved to file. Clear Log: Psion Shift This option lets you clear the log file of all entries. Print Log: Psion Shift Connect your printer and this will display the Note, the projected Due date and the actual completion date. Notepad writes by default a file called \Wrd\Nplog.wrd. This is a plain text file, although it opens fine in Word. Printing the Log gives you the option of appending this file each time, instead of creating a new file. However, if you open it, and save it using Psion, it will be saved in Psion's Word format. Once in Word format, Notepad won't be able to append to it anymore. So, don't save it in Word format if you want to continue appending to it. SECTION [7-5] Open Fastnote: Psion Shift To view all notes in fastnote, use this option. There is even a faster way to do this. You could keep a note on your top level notepad called Fastnote, and this note could expand (link) to the Fastnote.exp file. SECTION [7-6] Merge Fastnote: Psion Shift This option lets you merge the notes in Fastnote into your currently open notepad. You can of course view all notes in fastnote by just opening it as a standard notepad. This operation is to help speed things up. SECTION [8-1] UTILS Pop up Calculator: The calculator will take multiple operators. Example: 5*87.54\34-6+433 After hitting enter to get the answer, the Up arrow will take you in reverse back to the original calculation. Hitting "M" will put the result into the one calc memory. The calc memory can then be used in any calculation, like m+45*6\m . Use the help key for help. The calculator can also now be moved around the screen by pressing the arrow keys. Notepad remembers your calculator position on the screen, and uses it the next time youc call it up. SECTION [8-3] Paste Into Psion Shift Sometimes you may want to copy a note to another notepad. Pasting Into gives you a fast way of doing this. First Psion copies a note. Next instead of opening the notepad you want it pasted to , just highlight a note that expands to the notepad where you want it, and pres Psion Shift. The notepad will be opened and the note pasted. SECTION [8-4] Mark as Done When a note is completed you can mark it as done by pressing the space bar or Psion<->. Notepad will put a line through the note to show you that it is done. Use the Archive All Done option to copy marked notes to the Archive file. SECTION [8-5] Open Top Level Notepad (Psion, Psion Shift) This gives you a way to jump back to the top level Notepad very quickly. Top Level Indicator Next to the Alm Heading, Notepad shows an arrow facing upward when the current open notepad is a Top Level notepad. SECTION [9-1] Preferences: -, or Psion Notepad stores various preferences allowing you to set the program up to work in a way more to your liking. 1. Auto Sort Yes,No 2. Sort Method Priority,Due Date 3. Sound On,Off 4. Set Alarm after Enter Yes,No 5. Set Default for New Alarm Yes,No Time 6. Set Priority list Default,Custom 7. Save to log prompt Yes,No More Settings 1. Save with Date Yes,No 2. Color of Top Bar Black,Grey,Dot pattern 3. Password Protection On,Off 4. Font Size in Editor 8,11,13,16 5. Prompt "Abandon Changes" Yes,No 6. Close Windows When Going.." Yes,No 7. Display Due Date Remind..." Yes,No 8. Prompt for Wve File When..." Yes,No Explanation of options: AUTO SORT If you set "Auto Sort" to Yes, the current Notepad will be sorted after entering or updating data. Note: Pressing Shift will temporarily toggle Auto . Sorting on and off. SORT METHOD There are two choices for sorting. You can sort by Priority, or by Due Date. Choose Due Date only if you tend to rely on Due Dates. SOUND Notepad 5.0 doesn't use much sound, but turning it off should stop all beeps. SET ALARM AFTER ENTER Alarm after Enter lets you decide whether you want the prompt to add an alarm after entering data to each note. If you set this to "No", Notepad won't ask you to set an alarm after entering a new note. You can still enter alarms though from the menu. SET DEFAULT TIME FOR NEW ALARM Setting a default time for "Set Alarm" allows you to set a time that will be used as the default instead of the current time when you are setting an alarm using Psion. In other words if you always set alarms for 6:30pm, than set this option to 6:30pm, and every time you go to set an alarm it will come up with this time as default. SET PRIORITY LIST Set priority list lets you decide whether to use the default priority list or the custom list. SAVE TO LOG PROMPT When you press the space bar on a note to mark it as done, you can have the "Save to Log" prompt come up automatically at this point. SAVE WITH DATE The "Save with Date" option comes into play when entering data. You may like to have the "Save with date" option set to "Yes" if you usually do save all of your notes with a Due date. If you don't save your notes with a Due date you'll want to set this to "No". COLOR OF TOP BAR Notepad 5.0 has a bar along the top of the screen. You can change the color of this bar. There are three choices, Black (Default), Grey, or Dot pattern. PASSWORD PROTECTION Decide whether or not you want a Password dialog to come up when starting the program. FONT SIZE IN EDITOR You may like to have a set font size in the Text Editor. This lets you save your favorite size. PROMPT "Abandon Changes" IN EDITOR When pressing Escape in the Text Editor you may want Notepad to remind you that you are about to lose your changes. Set this to "Yes" if you want this warning. CLOSE WINDOWS WHEN GOING TO BACKROUND This is a memory saving option. If you want Notepad to use a bit less memory when in the backround, you can tell it to close all of it's windows when it's in the backround. This releases the memory used to create these windows. However, if you use this feature you will see the windows being opened when you come back into Notepad. This makes it a bit slower. It's your choice. DISPLAY DUE DATE REMINDERS AT STARTUP You decide whether or not you want Notepad reminding you of a note that is due today. Sometimes reminders get in the way, so Notepad gives you a choice as to whether you want this reminder or not. PROMPT FOR WVE FILE WHEN SETTING ALARMS When setting an Alarm after entering a new note, or when selecting the Set Alarm option on the menu, you have the option to choose the sound you want to be used for the alarm. If you have many sounds on your Psion, you may not want this option since it can get slow building a list of all sound files on all drives of your Psion. If you don't have that many sound files, it shouldn't slow you down. DEFAULT DRIVE FOR EXPANDING NOTES To save time, Notepad now lets you select your default drive for expanding notes. You can still choose a drive by pressing Escape when Notepad prompts you for a filename for the expanded notepad. SECTION [9-2] Password Protection: Psion Shift You can password protect your notepad files by turning password protection on in the preferences. Use this option to set the password, or to change the password. New Password ------------ Enter Password: Confirm Password: If you press Esc here, no password will be set. The password is not case sensitive. In order to change the password, you must know the current password. This protects you from the possibility of someone else changing your password. Password protecting individual files: As an easy method for password protecting individual notepad files, just include the characters w4 in the filename of any notepad file, and it will require a password to open it. This may seem to easy a code to break, but most people wouldn't think of renaming the file to get access to it. SECTION [9-3] Zoom In This feature lets you increase the font size. You have a choice of four different sizes. Use Zoom Out to go in reverse. SECTION [9-4] Zoom Out The opposite of Zoom In, this reduces the font size. SECTION [9-5] Printing Notes: Psion

You can print to printer or to file. You have the option of opening all expandable pads 3 levels deep or not opening them at all. You also have the option of adding line numbers. The line numbers are helpful when opening the expandable notepads because it puts them in a more organized format. Setting Lines per Page: You can now set the number of lines per page. Different countries use different size paper as their standard size. This lets you choose the number of lines per Page to be printed. SECTION [9-6] Export: Psion Shift This new feature allows exporting of notepad files in two formats for now. . Ascii Text . Dbf This should help for those that need to get the text into another program. SECTION [10-1] Auto evaluate: Notepad will evaluate a mathematical calculation if enclosed in brackets. Example: Total for phone is [35*3-5.00] Note will show: Total for phone is 100.50 SECTION [10-2] Autodialer: Notepad now supports the autodialer feature using the same key combination as the built in S3a software. (Psion) When the dialer dialog box comes up, just type in the phone number you wish to dial. To include auto dialer numbers within a notepad just enclose the phone numbers inside brackets like these. {555-1212} SECTION [10-3] Suggestions: To benefit from the Notepad Manager I have experimented with a layout concept for Notepad files. The key is not to just create files indescriminately. Rather create a Top Level Notepad (Parent), that contains main ideas you would want to expand on. This way only the Top Level Notepad will show up under the Notepad icon. The Lower level notepads dont show up, because they would get too numerous. Here's a suggestion to get used to using the Notepad Manager. Create a Notepad called Master. Within Master create notes with headings of your own Hot topics. For example: 1. Personal 2. Business 3. Flights 4. Birthdays 5. Memo's 6. Big events - Friends wedding, etc... Next highlight one at a time and press the right arrow key. Expand each main topic giving them appropriate file names. (You won't have to remember the file name, but it's helpful if you want to link the new notepad with other notes.) When the new notepad opens, you can start putting in relevent data. if you want it password protected, include the characters w4 in the filename. Press the Escape key and you can go back to the Top Level Notepad. Now repeat this procedure for the other Projects/headings. SECTION [10-4] Credits Special Thanks to Tom Dolbilin for his work on supporting Bring from OPL. Special Thanks to Phil Creed for designing some great icons. SECTION [10-5] Map This button is reserved for future use. SECTION [10-6] TaskList The TaskList can be called up by pressing Shift. It meant to be a two handed operation using the right hand on the shift key, and the left on the tab. After pressing Shift, press Tab again to open up the list. This brings up a list of all running applications on you S3a. Move to an application and press Enter to jump to it. SECTION [11-1] Pelican Alarm Server About the Server The Pelican Alarm server is a stand alone application that runs separate from Notepad. Filename: Aserver.opo Function/technical explanation Its function is to queue up all Notepad alarms. All alarms will work like the built in S3a system alarms. All alarm info is stored in the "M:\App\Aserver\alarm.dat" file. How does it work? The Alarm Server runs as a separate app, (Aserver.opo) and runs in the backround, for the most part. As you set alarms in Np, messages are sent to the Server that there is new alarm information that needs to be looked at. When the Server receives this message, it does one of two things. 1. Queue the alarm, if there are none already queued. 2. If the Server already has an alarm queued, it checks to see if there is a newer alarm now than the one that is currently queued, (which would be cancelled), or the current alarm information may have changed. Maybe you had an alarm set to go off at 3:00, but now you want it to ring at 5:00. In Np you would press Psion to reset alarm. After resetting the alarm Np will send a message to the server that alarm info has changed. ** Note ** All functions in Np that affect alarms send messages to the Alarm Server. For this reason it is important that the Server is running. What if the Server is not running? If the Server is not running the alarm info will still be saved to file, but the alarms will not ring since they are not being sent to the built-in alarm system. They will ring however as soon as the Server is started. (which may be too late!) SECTION [11-2] How do I start the Server? There are two ways to start it running. The first way is to use the hotkey in Np which is the key alone. This prompts you to start the Alarm Server. The second way is from the system screen under the opl icon. (if you copied the Aserver.opo to your \opo directory.) The installer does copy it there. The Aserver.opo must be in one of two directories. 1. Any \App\Npad directory 2. Any \Opo directory (Preferable) I recommend keeping it in the \Opo directory since you will use it as a separate application at times. This way it will be easy to start running manually, since it will show up under the Opl icon. SECTION [11-3] Alarm Server functions How is the Server useful without Notepad? The Alarm Server is not a dumb backround program. You can add new alarms from the Server, or edit any existing alarms. Adding new alarms is a very nice feature. Maybe you want to add a quick alarm, but Np is not running. You can go to the Server application, press Enter and add an alarm. It will not show up in Notepad as a note, but you will get your alarm. Notepad functions that affect alarms 1. Set alarm 2. Remove alarm 3. Show/Edit alarm 4. Deleting a note with an alarm Option to cancel alarm. 5. Editing a note with an alarm The alarm message will update. *** Warning *** Please note that if you leave the Alarm Server while in an open dialog or menu, the Server will not be able to snooze an alarm when it expires. It will also cease to queue any new alarms. Therefore, when you leave the Alarm Server to go to some other application, make sure you leave it on the main screen. SECTION [12-1] Project Viewer The Project Viewer is much enhanced in Notepad 5.0. You can get to it either by pressing the P hotkey, or by pressing the diamond key. There are two main views in Notepad. Main, and Project Viewer. Each time you save a note with a Due Date, it gets sent to the Project Due Date file. These Due Dates can be viewed in a graphic format in the Project Viewer. You will see each day of the month, with a block under the day that has an item due. Each day can have up to five projects due. Use the menu key to see options. Use the arrow keys to move around the viewer between days. Of course you must have at least one due date for the viewer to show you the current month. While viewing, use the <> keys to change months, or the menu key gives you the option to jump to a month. The Project Viewer pops up a window on the top of the screen that shows you the text of the highlighted block. If you have many due dates in a month and want to move quickly to a certain date, turn off the viewer window by pressing the tab key. This toggles the window on and off. Editing a Due Date: Press Enter to edit a due date. When you edit a Due Date from the Project Viewer, the note it came from is also edited. Delete a Due Date: When you highlight a Due Date in the Project Viewer, and press Delete, you have the option of deleting the Due Date from the Project Viewer database. Note that the Due Date is also removed from the note itself. Tidy Feature: On the menu you will find the option called "Tidy Due Dates". Notepad will look into the Project Viewer database, and erase any Due Dates between the starting and ending dates that you set. Note that this will not remove the Due Dates from the note itself, but only from the Project Viewer database, which is separate from the notepads. Report Past Due: This menu option will create a list of all Past Due items. The file is created in a \Wrd directory. This can opened in Word. Or, you could create a note, and then link it to the report file.

KEY, or diamond Hint: The left arrow key will only go back to the last notepad. It won't go back more than one level. A quick way to get to the top notepad is to press Escape. The Notepad Manager always puts the top level notepad on the top of it's list. This is so that you can quickly move to it. ******** That's it ******** See section 1-4 for an overview on how Notepad works. If you understand what Notepad can do, you'll be able to jump right in and get started. Of course there are many other tools and features that you'll learn along the way, but this will get you started. Install the application using the installer if possible. (It's faster!) Run Notepad and start entering notes. SECTION [1-1] Registration Notepad 5.0 can be registered in various ways. . Compuserve Online registration via "Go Swreg" SWREG ID = 273 . Included are installers for MCLINK and RCOM. installa.mcl MCLINK - copies files to S3a Disk A installb.mcl MCLINK - copies files to S3a Disk B installm.mcl MCLINK - copies files to S3a Disk Internal Install.bat RCOM Installer USING MCLINK - To install Notepad 5.0 using MCLINK, run MCLINK from the same directory where you have your Notepad files. If you have MCLINK in your path, you can move to your Notepad directory and just type in the command that you use to start MCLINK. If it's not in your Path (If you're using a Pc), then you'll need to type in the full path of MCLINK to start the program. (If you have MCLINK in a Psion\Mclink directory, you would type in \Psion\Mclink\Mclink) Once you've got MCLINK running, and the Link is established, type in the name of the installer that you want to use. There are three MCLINK installers. Use the one that copies the files to the Drive on your S3a that you want to use. To copy all files to SSD Drive A, you would type in @installa.mcl. Don't forget the @ character. This tells MCLINK to run an existing batch file. USING RCOM To install Notepad 5.0 using RCOM, run RCOM and move to the directory where you have Notepad. Type in Install x: where x: is the drive on your S3a where you want Notepad installed. SECTION [1-3] Files needed to run Notepad 5.0 (Np50f.zip) FILENAME: WHERE DO THESE FILES GO? --------- ------------------------- 1. Notepad.opa (\App directory) 2. Np2.opo (\App\Npad directory) 3. Viewer.opo (\App\Npad directory) 4. Np.fon (\App\Npad directory) 5. NpHelp.rsc (\App\Npad directory) 6. Aserver.opo (\Opo dir) (optional if you don't need alarms) Additional Utilities 7. Fastnote.opa (\App directory) 8. Nconvert.opa (\App directory) You don't need to know about these files if you use the Installation procedure. This list is provided for manual install and clarification only. SECTION [1-4] Overview Notepad is a Todo list/Project manager. It allows you to create notes as you need them by typing in a full screen text editor. When you are finished typing in a note you will have the option to define this note as a Project that should complete on a certain date. You will also be able to attach an alarm to this note or link it to any other Series 3a application. Notepad has been set up to be just like a physical notepad. Taking personal notes or work/project related notes should be simple and fast, to make it convenient. Along these lines, Notepad also comes with a separate application to save a quick note. It is called Fastnote.opa. It can be installed to the system screen and run as a separate application. It opens in a second and you're ready to start taking notes. All notes created in fastnote.opa can be easily imported into any notepad you have. Notepad 5.0 has an auto merge feature to bring in these notes to the currently open notepad. As a type 3 application (In S3a terminology), you can run multiple notepads, or change notepads from the system screen by pressing enter while highlighting the notepad file you want to change to. Or you can create new Notepad files from the system screen by pressing Psion. Your notepads can get as big as you like. I have found the best way to use Notepad is to keep it open and to assign a hot key to it. You can do this by first highlighting Notepad while in the system screen, then press Psion. Next decide which key combination you want to assign to Notepad. Control+Agenda might make sense if your not already using it. As you add entries you will find you need alarms set for some of them. Press Psion to set an alarm. Notepad alarms work identical to the way the S3a alarms work. The alarm will ring whether you are in Notepad or not. (See Section 5 and 11 for info on alarms) When the alarm rings, you will have the option to press a snooze button, and the alarm will go off again in the amount of time set by you, or default (60 minutes). If you don't want the alarm to go off until the next day, you can also reset the alarm to a different day, or hit the tommorrow button. The tommorrow button resets the alarm to a preset time the next day. Notepad 5.0 also now supports repeating alarms. See the section on alarms for all of the details. If you get into a situation where you have multiple notepads that really could be combined, you can go to "Merge" and merge the notepads together. If you enter a note that has a calculation in it, you have two tools to help you out. First a pop up calculator. You can figure out your calculation, then put the amount into the note. The second option is to just enter the calculation enclosed in brackets and Notepad will figure out the answer for you. [brackets like these] not these(). One of the nicest features of Notepad is the Project Manager/Project Viewer. This represents a group of programs built in to Notepad 5.0 that will link individual notes to other notepads or project files, so that with the press of a key, any note, or idea can be expanded to its own group of notes. A project can have a Due date attached to it and then viewed on a Calendar type grid by using the Project Viewer.
